A Tale of Two Rivers-Dorian Rose
Dorian Rose walked from his mansion on the river to his antique shop on Main Street. A distinguished looking gentleman -buffed, light silver hair against golden brown skin, he moved with grace and style. Many women had felt their desire heat up when they looked into his electric blue eyes, but all was wasted. Dorian was gay. He had a clandestine lover, but he was sure none of the town suspected his secret.
A creature of habit, he stopped to get a cup of white chocolate mocha at the coffee shop and a cranberry muffin. Unlocking the door to his antique shop, Second Hand Rose, he welcomed the quiet and the dark. With a flick of a switch, light filled his neat little space. He loved the unique pieces of history and the fact that each had a story. The scent that filled the rooms was of sandalwood oils and exotic woods.
Dorian was pulling open the heavy maroon and gold drapes on the large glass windows, when he saw a commotion of people gathering on the sidewalk. Abandoning his normal morning ritual, he walked outside and towards the crowd. The circle consisted of the business owners on Main Street.
Mel, the hardware store owner, had his arms crossed and announced with great authority.”It’s human!”
“Are you sure?” The owner of the beauty shop looked horrified.
Dorian interrupted the conversation. “What are you talking about?”
The man pointed towards the large crane standing tall and majestic against the morning sky. “A bone was found at the construction site of the new library.”
Dorian felt the fear in his stomach start to rise to his throat. Unanswered questions swirled around in his head. It couldn’t be what he was afraid it was, but how would he find out. Not wanting to draw
attention to his curiosity, he off-handedly remarked. “I would bet it’s a dinosaur bone before I would speculate it was human.”
Once back inside he found his breathing coming in quick hard to catch breaths. Dorian had a secret he was hiding, and a human bone could unravel it all. He looked around his neat little shop. He did not welcome surprises in his life. However, Dorian knew men who carry dark secrets always lived in fear that someday the secret would surface. He just hoped today was not the day his was unleashed.
